You start with their face. If you find a connection, you continue to understand, ‘what are our common interests, our social groups? While often referred to as a “hookup app,” Tinder’s developers deny that’s its intended purpose, saying that their own research indicates that only six percent of users see it as such.
Users build profiles by importing photos and interests from their Facebook accounts, and tell the app the genders, age range, and geographic radius they want to get matches from, and then the app starts producing matches fitting the search criteria. Matches with whom you share Facebook friends or interests show up earlier. Each match appears looking initially like the picture below on the left, from which one can pull up profile details, which display like the screen on the right:.
Sixty librarians had signed up for this event. We ate first, and then jumped into Author Speed Dating. Since there were five of us, we had the librarians spaced out at five tables. During the allotted time, we each gave a spiel about our books before the bell rang indicating our time was up. We hopped from table to table this way. The librarians seemed to enjoy hearing from us individually, and it was a great way for us to inform them about our work.

In addition, we were blessed to have Meghan Reidy, whose family has been of great support to the Center for many years, assist them in their duties for a month. Here they look back fondly on this past summer. The experience has language as well as physical and emotional challenges. Yet, as coordinators, most importantly we developed a deep belief in the ideals of the Center and in its capacity to proceed with boldness and a common purpose to work toward achieving all its goals and ultimately to reduce poverty in this little neck of the world.
The economic reality of poverty on its face concerns only material things, but it is more a moral issue that the Center programs address. We recognized an understanding of this principle in the marvelous, collaborative effort of the Marquette University High School and Scranton University groups. Nothing was wanting.
