Elna “Grasshopper” Demo Model

Serendipitious Sid. I know this is a really strange request, and I’m sorry if this is the wrong forum for my question but We have two Elna sewing machines made in which use an obsolete Swiss mains connector plug. It plugs into this socket Can anybody please suggest where I could try to get such a plug from, or even find out exactly what the proper name is for this type of plug? Maybe a sewing machine repair place which has been in business forever? A place that sells antique sewing machines?

OK, we start by lifting the access door on the bend in the arm, and noting the serial number, the first digit of which is the last digit of the year of manufacture …. Now, given that most Grasshoppers were produced between and , the question arises as to whether this one is or Similarly, any serial number starting in 0 or 1 is going to be ambiguous. So how to tell?

Out of the 7 machines I have here right now, the only one without a date punched on the periphery of that access hole is the one with the serial number starting with a 5, and that has to be 19 45 because production had stopped before I have seen a date-stamp inside a motor housing done with an ordinary rubber stamp, and apparently some machines were rubber-stamped with a date underneath, but whether or not those could be taken to be its official date of birth I have no idea.

Another way you can tell if its or is the red paint at the oiling points. Sure, or you could go by the stitch regulator numbering, whether some of the screws are crosshead or slotted, and so on. Together with several partners, he founded the holding company in Monaco “Electrina”. The first and last syllables of the name of this company give the name of his future sewing machine – “ELNA”. However, the first attempts to organize mass production of a sewing machine showed that it requires completely different tools than the partners could contribute. Casas began negotiations with the Geneva Company “Tovaro SA”, which was engaged in manufacturing watch movements.

Yielding all rights to their inventions company “Tovaro” clearly list their commitments to Elna, and Casas finally got started on the initial production of sewing machines. The first series of sewing machines was released in , and was an immediate success. The Elna was also appreciated for being the first to use, light weight metal, with a great simplified portable design in comparison with the large heavy machines of other developers.
